The Newport Performing Arts Center sits on the historic Nye Beach* area overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It welcomes performers of international stature to its stage, as well as five local theater companies, three local dance companies and several music groups.
Visual Arts Center

Also located in Nye Beach, this facility has a bright and airy main gallery where local and international artists show their work. The center also contains a photography lab and a studio/classroom. It is a hub for many workshops, classes and exhibitions offered by the Yaquina Arts Association, the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts and many independent artists.
Yaquina Arts Center
Newport, OR
The Yaquina Arts Center is located in a 100-year-old historic building that sits on Nye Beach*. The center is home to the Yaquina Arts Association, the oldest art group in Lincoln County. The building was once a bathhouse, as well as a restaurant and currently serves as a gallery, gift shop and classroom.
* The Nye Beach historical area is just 23.1 miles south of the Inn At Spanish Head on U.S. Highway 101, then west on NW 3rd Street in Newport.
Covered Bridges
Lincoln County is home to three of Oregon's 52 historic covered bridges that remain intact. Each is painted barn red; most in Oregon are white.
Chitwood Bridge
Originally built in 1930, this bridge was rebuilt in 1983. It can be reached by heading east from Newport (30 miles south on Highway 101 from the Inn) on Highway 20. The bridge is on the right at Milepost 17. It is open to light automobile traffic.
Fisher School Bridge
This bridge was built in 1919 with a Howe truss and is 72 feet long. To get to the bridge, drive east from Waldport (40 miles south on Highway 101 from the Inn) on Oregon Highway 34 for about 20 miles. Turn right on Five Rivers Road. At the Siletz Road fork, bear left past Buck Creek Road for about one mile. The bridge, crossing Five Rivers, is on the right. It is closed to cars. A modern bridge has been built next to it. This is a very scenic area and photographs well.
North Fork Bridge
The North Fork (of the Yachats River) Bridge was built in 1938 with a Queenpost truss, one of the few of this type remaining in Oregon. It is the shortest at 42 feet. To reach the bridge, head east from Yachats (Yachats is 45 miles south of the Inn on Highway 101) on Yachats River Road. After about seven miles, turn left just beyond a cement bridge. The covered bridge is two miles further, crossing the North Fork of the Yachats River. It is still open to regular automobile traffic.

Blue Heron Landing/West
Situated on Devils Lake, Blue Heron Landing has boats, wave runners and paddle boats to explore this fresh-water lake right in Lincoln City. Drive 5 miles north of the Inn on U.S. Highway 101 and turn right on West Devils Lake Road. It's just 1/10 of a mile to Blue Heron Landing.
Newport's Historic Bay Front

Ripley's Believe It or Not, the Undersea Gardens, the Wax Museum, restaurants, gift shops and more are located on Newport's Historic Bay Front. Drive 23.5 miles south from the Inn on U.S. Highway 101. Turn left onto Hurbert Street and follow the signs.
Regatta Grounds
Located right on Devils Lake, there's fun for the whole family at the Regatta Grounds. From the Inn drive 3.1 miles north on U.S. Highway 101 to NE 14th Street. Turn right and drive for 4.6 miles. You'll find swimming, fishing, a boat ramp and a special children's play area.
Skate Board Park
From the Inn drive 3.5 miles north on U.S. Highway 101 to 22nd Street. Turn right for .2 miles to NE Reef and turn left to find the park.

Birdwatching is one of the fastest growing outdoor recreational activities in the counrty, and in response the Oregon Coast Birding Trail was created for birding enthusiasts. Hiking
Cascade Head
The grassy meadow atop Cascade Head has a postcard view of the Salmon River estuary and the long beach that fronts Lincoln City. The Nature Conservancy owns 280 acres. Dogs and bicycles are not allowed and hikers must stay on the tread of the trail. To find the lower trailhead on the south side of Cascade Head, drive 1.1 miles north of the U.S. 101/Oregon 18 interchange at the north end of Lincoln City. Turn left (west) on Three Rocks Road, drive 2.3 miles to Savage Road, turn right and continue 0.4 miles to the trailhead. Parking is no longer allowed at the trailhead, so drive back down Savage Road and west on Three Rocks Road (a total of 0.7 miles) and park at Knight Park. For the more hearty hikers, look for the Harts Cove Trail, where you'll find stands of old growth timber and beautiful meadows. This trail is further north on Highway 101 and is closed during certain times of the year.

Cape Perpetua Scenic Hiking Trails
The Visitors Center turnoff is located approximately 52 miles south of the Inn At Spanish Head on U.S. Highway 101. It is open 9am-5pm every day except Christmas. Admission is free. You'll find trails for every member of the family.
- Captain Cook
0.6 miles from the visitors center under Highway 101 through wind sculpted vegetation, past Indian shell middens and the old CCC camp to tide pools. At high tide, spouting horns can be observed across Cook's Chasm. Paved. Easy walk. Tide pools.
- Giant Spruce
1.0 miles from the visitors center to the 500 year old "Giant Spruce," the Trail parallels Cape Creek through old growth forest with lush ferns, huge skunk cabbage and abundant wildlife. Paved. Easy walk. Old growth.
- Restless Waters
0.4 miles from the Devil's Churn parking area, past Devil's Churn along the lava rocks and tide pools to join the Cape Cove Trail. Paved. Watch for waves! Pounding surf.
- St. Perpetua
1.3 miles from the visitors center to the viewpoint. The switchback trail climbs the south face of Cape Perpetua and affords some excellent views of the Pacific. There is a 600-foot change in elevation. Moderate to difficult hike. Ocean views.
- Cape Cove
0.3 miles from the Restless Waters Trail to the Captain Cook Trail behind Cape Cove Beach. Paved. Easy walk. Pounding surf.
- Oregon Coast
1.2 miles from the visitors center to the Cummins Creek trailhead. This trail overlooks the highway and rocky shoreline. Moderate walk. Ocean view.
- Cook's Ridge-Gwynn Creek
7 mile loop trip from the east end of the visitors center parking lot through old growth forest. There are few ocean views. Moderate to difficult hike. Old growth forest.
- Cummins Creek
10 miles from the visitors center up Cook's Ridge trail to Cummins Creek trail, down to the Oregon Coast trail and back to the visitors center. Moderate to difficult hike. Old growth forest. Open meadows. Ocean views.
Drift Creek Falls
A 250-foot suspension bridge spans Drift Creek Canyon, 100 feet above the creek and directly above a 75-foot waterfall. A 1-1/4-mile trail begins in the Coast Range just east of Lincoln City. From U.S. 101 at the south end of Lincoln City, turn east on Drift Creek Road, right on South Drift Creek Road, left on Forest Road 17 and follow signs to the trailhead. There is a $5/day parking fee, paid on site.

Neskowin Beach
The northern portion of a 4.5-mile beach near Neskowin is about as wild as it gets on the northern Oregon Coast and a great place to find whole sand dollars. Getting there: Stretching north from Cascade Head, the beach is easily accessible from Neskowin Beach Wayside on U.S. Highway 101, seven miles from the north end of Lincoln City.
Roads End Wayside
At the north end of Lincoln City, you'll find Roads End Wayside. From the Inn At Spanish Head drive 5.6 miles north on Highway 101, make a left turn onto Logan Road at the Safeway and Lighthouse Shopping Center and follow the signs.
Salishan Spit
The three-mile sand spit at the mouth of the Siletz River has a remote feel even though it's within easy reach of some of Oregon's most exclusive beachfront homes. Wildlife, especially harbor seals and shorebirds, are often seen in the Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge just inside the spit. Getting there: To hike the beach, drive south from the Inn At Spanish Head 4.2 miles on U.S. Highway 101 through the traffic light at The Shops at Salishan at Gleneden Beach. From the traffic light drive 1.1 miles, turn west (right) on Wesler Street, drive 0.3 miles and park at Gleneden Beach State Wayside. The gated community on Salishan Spit restricts automobile access, but walkers are welcome on its public paths. The 4.5-mile peninsula loop walk begins at The Shops parking lot.

A research and teaching facility, this Center is located in Newport on the Yaquina Bay estuary about a mile from the open waters of the Pacific Ocean. It plays an integral role in programs of ocean-related research and instruction, both as a laboratory facility serving resident scientists and as a base for far-ranging oceanographic studies. The Center is open to the public and offers many interactive and educational displays. Getting there: Drive 25 miles south of the Inn At Spanish Head through Newport and over the Yaquina Bay Bridge, then follow the signs to the Science Center.

Yaquina Head Natural Area
Fast becoming one of the area's major visitor attractions, the Yaquina Head Natural Area offers paved roads for easy access to the Yaquina Head Lighthouse and wildlife sanctuary. A stairway has been constructed to allow visitors access down the cliff to the tide pools where a BLM representative is often available to answers questions. This is also one of the region's areas designated as a whale-watching site. It is open dawn to dusk and is located just 23 miles south of the Inn At Spanish Head on Highway 101.
Lighthouses
Cape Meares Lighthouse

Located in the Cape Meares State Park 10 miles west of Tillamook and U.S. Highway 101, this lighthouse stands 217 feet above the ocean. Its tower, however, is the shortest of any on the Oregon Coast, standing just 38 feet high. It was first illuminated in 1890 and replaced by an automatic beacon in 1963. The lighthouse is open to the public 11am-4pm daily from May to September and on weekends only in October, March, April and other announced times. From the parking lot you'll find a short trail that leads to the "Octopus Tree," a Sitka spruce with "arms" that touch the ground.
Heceta Head Lighthouse

The lighthouse is located just 12 miles north of Florence, Oregon, on the west side of the 1,000-foot high Heceta Head, 205 feet above the ocean. The light at the top of its 56-foot tower was first illuminated in 1894. Today, its automated beacon can be seen 21 miles from land and is rated as the strongest light on the Oregon Coast. It is open for tours 12 noon to 5pm daily from May to September. Off-season tours may be arranged by calling 503-547-3416. Hiking trails are available in the area.
Yaquina Bay Lighthouse

Located on the north end of Yaquina Bay in Newport*, Oregon, this lighthouse is the second oldest standing structure on the Oregon Coast. Its 40-foot tower with a decorative light rises from a Cape Cod style house. It is open daily 11am-5pm from May to September and on weekends from 12 noon to 4pm the rest of the year. Drive 24 miles south of the Inn At Spanish Head on U.S. Highway 101 to the turnoff to the lighthouse and Yaquina Bay State Park.

National Forests
Siuslaw National Forest
Located in the Coast Range of Oregon, it is 630,395 acres that extend from Tillamook to Coos Bay. This forest is just one of two in the continental U.S. whose borders include the Pacific Ocean. Coastal scenic attractions within the Siuslaw National Forest include Cascade Head Scenic & Research Area, Cape Perpetua and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. It contains three designated wilderness areas: Cummins Creek, Driftwood Creek and Rock Creek. The Siuslaw has both fresh- and salt-water fishing opportunities for salmon, steelhead and sea-run cutthroat trout. The lakes have a variety of trout, catfish, yellow perch, bluegill and largemouth bass.

This museum features more than 2,000 items from large pieces of machinery to small household articles depicting the life in and around Lincoln City. Included are displays on military history, Indian life, homesteading, fishing and logging.
Lincoln County Historical Society and Museum

The Burrows House, built in 1895, is home to a museum, the Lincoln County Historical Society and the society's bookshop. The museum exhibits include household furnishing, clothing and the history of Lincoln County. In the bookshop you'll discover a selection of books on the Pacific Northwest, the early days of Lincoln County, cookbooks, postcards, paper dolls and greeting cards.
Yaquina Bay Lighthouse Museum

Built in 1871, this is the Oregon Coast's oldest lighthouse and the oldest existing building in Newport. It has been refurbished and restored and is listed on the National Register of Historic places. Drive 24. miles south of the Inn on U.S. Highway 101 to the turnoff to the Yaquina Bay State Park.

Whale Watching
Lincoln County is prime whale-watching territory and the Inn At Spanish Head is a designated "Whale Speak" facility. Whale species to watch for on the Oregon Coast include:
- Gray Whales - Splotchy gray color with barnacles on skin and ridges along the back just in front of the tail.
- Humpback Whales - Long white flippers, bumps on the top of the head, very strong angle of the back when diving, short dorsal fin.
- Killer or Orca Whales - Tall dorsal fin, very distinct black and white pattern, often seen in groups.
- Sperm Whales - Square-shaped head, blows at a 45-degree angle from the top of the head, ridges along tail stalk, wrinkled-looking skin, often seen in groups.
